Canada offers citizenship either by birth or through nationalization in Canada. Currently, permanent residents after spending three years during the preceding five years can qualify for canadian citizenship certificate under nationalization. So, obtaining permanent residency (PR) is the initial step towards getting citizenship in Canada.
Canada is one of the countries which acknowledge dual citizenship. So, you may not need to give up your previous passport.
In order to become a Canadian Citizen, the applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant should be a Permanent Resident of Canada.
- The applicant should have lived in Canada for a minimum of 3 years out of past 5 years (1,095 days).
- The applicant is required to pass the citizenship test.
- The applicant is required to prove their language skills in English and/or French.
- The applicant must have filed their taxes.
